Be Watchful, Stand Firm in Your Faith, Be Courageous, Be Strong…and go to the movies?

Watch, stand and don’t move, be courageous…oh yeah, be strong too…Paul’s challenge to the Corinthian believers might as well have been to the believers of Ft. Myers or all of Lee County.  Our challenges over the last several years have been over the top for some and for the rest, ‘it’s the new normal’ or ‘flat is the new up’ as one friend put it.  No matter, everyone’s faith has quaked at one point or another.

Even while God holds us in his arms and shelters us through the storms of life, He challenges us to be courageous.  I know just how difficult it is to be brave when you don’t feel like it.  How can we help others when we can’t find the strength to help ourselves?  He empowers us with his strength.  How can we reach a city for Christ when the Church is so wrapped up in it’s issues of hurting families and hurting financial statements?  He empowers us in his strength as we stand firm in the faith and find courage, remembering that we have a higher calling, with the greatest commission, to reach others in the midst of their storms, even while ours may be raging with water pouring in over every side of our boat.

Need a jolt?  Need a touch from the Father?  Do you know someone that needs your heavenly perspective?  Bring them to the theater!

“Courageous” the movie is coming to our local theaters September 30th and it is an awesome movie.  My wife and I attended the screening at First Assembly this week; we laughed, we cried and we were sufficiently challenged.  It is a Christian film we need to support as it challenges us toward stronger families, choices born of integrity and looking beyond ourselves and reaching those left behind.

Malachi 4:6
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers

Courageous is not just a movie, it is a movement.

We are asking all people of faith in Lee County to come out on September 30, the first day of the showing–support a movie that can impact the culture of a region, one family and one man at a time. The number of people that show up on the first night will determine how many days the movie is in our local theaters.

Next Blog…how does a movie impact a nation?  The answer lies in the mountains of the earth…curious, check it out.

Until next time, be blessed.

Don’t Give Up. Don’t Ever Give Up.

When you look at the world around us, either on television or the internet, things seem dark.  Then, when we look at our own frail local economy, pay checks or lack thereof, health concerns, family issues that have not gone as planned–it seems really dark–the  dark that you cannot see your hand in front of your face kind of dark.

But Jesus.  The light came into the world through Jesus Christ and the darkness did not understand the light.  (John 1:5). Darkness is confused by light, light is never confused by darkness.  Stuff happens. Good stuff and bad stuff happens and we, as children of light, get to make a choice and calculate our response, rather than react emotionally to what we see.  The opposite of faith, is sight and what we see may often not reflect the truth of God over our lives and the situations we face.  Situations change, but He never changes!

So, how should we respond to increasing darkness?

Occasionally, I get to fly around the country and like many of my fellow passengers, I’ve grown very accustomed to the flight safety demonstrations.  However, when I have paid attention,  the demo on the oxygen masks is very interesting; “should the unlikely event occur that you find yourself unable to breath life giving air, this little thing will come from above and sustain your life! (she says while smiling)  The part I find interesting is this, they always tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first, so you can then help others, even your own children.  As the theory goes, if you’re passed out from oxygen deprivation, how can you possibly help those you love or anyone else for that matter?

Good point.

Life is very much like that flight demonstration.  Heaven forbid we should find ourselves in actual economic, financial, emotional or any other kind of turbulence that begins to suck the oxygen from our lungs.  As we grasp for air what do we do?  We reach up and take the mask with the life sustaining tube that connects to the source of all life and we breath deep.

Bill Johnson in his book, “Strengthening Yourself in the Lord”, makes a very good point in that one of the reasons the church is not as effective in advancing the Kingdom of God on earth today is that believers have not learned to ‘strengthen themselves in the Lord’.  He goes on to tell one of my favorite stories about David and his mighty men; having been rejected by everyone, they return to Ziklag to find that the enemy has stolen everything–wives, kids, livestock–all possessions–gone.  Now, even David’s mighty men, his best friends, turned on him and were picking up the stones to end his dream filled life.  David’s men were ready to do their part and cancel out the word of God spoken over David since he was a boy; they were about to rob him of his destiny–the enemy had come to steal, kill and destroy promises over this man’s life.  In stealing a man’s promises and destiny, the enemy robs the world of the gifts that were meant to bless God and others.  The Psalms that bring us so much comfort today may never have been written and Israel would have never seen the greatest king to every preside over their people if David didn’t survive the most painful and dark challenge to date…but he had a plan and he was prepared with a response.

What is David’s response to his darkest hour?

The bible says that David ‘strengthened himself in the Lord’.  He didn’t welcome the stones to remove the pain, he turned to The source of life giving oxygen and strengthened himself in the Lord.  The joy of the Lord was his strength and it is available for us as well if we will yield to him and reject the floundering fear that reaches out to steal, kill and destroy everything.  The oxygen mask is already hanging down right in front of us; His name is Jesus and He is life–He is our breath of life.

My personal belief is that this message is on the heart of our Father for this very hour.  My friend Stan gave a very good talk last night about how to strengthen yourself in the Lord.  He said you can either die to your troubles or die from them. He, like many of us, have been struggling in this economy for more years that we ever thought we would, yet others we know have bigger struggles…ah, but Jesus.  Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings–everything must bow to the name of Jesus, everything.  Struggle, fear, panic, confusion, desperation, discouragement, loss–all are names that must bow on bended knee.

We are called to reach cities and nations for Christ, teaching them to obey everything taught by Christ.  How can we put oxygen masks on a city, if we don’t first put it on ourselves–gaining life sustaining breath, perspective and strength.
Through faith they conquered kingdoms, did what God approved, and received what God had promised. They shut the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, and escaped death. They found strength when they were weak. They were powerful in battle and defeated other armies. Heb. 11:33-34

Don’t give up.  He has a way for all these things you need to be accomplished.  We serve the God who specializes in things others say is ‘impossible’.  Put your faith in him and “Don’t ever give up!”

Blessings, peace and abundant joy,

What is Reach My City?

Reach My City is a new blog dedicated to challenging, equipping and supporting those people who are called to reach whole cities for Christ.  Often, it can be lonely when you have lofty goals beyond the ordinary and comfortable.  The writers of this blog want you to know that you are not alone and that you are indeed endeavoring to partner with Jesus in fulfilling the great commission in our time.  Just like the early Church, operating in power and authority, reaching thousands and millions must be our goal–they knew nothing except reaching Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and then the ends of the earth.  They were given big goals, so they only thought big thoughts–it was a law of expectation that governed how they lived, worked and played–it was who they were and they were not taught to live with decreasing expectations.

We serve a God that desires that ‘none should perish’.  None means none, zero, nada, right?  If He wills that none should perish how can we live with acceptable losses?  Churches built on corners, hanging a sign and living with a ‘if we build it they will come in’ mentality is not taught in the Bible; Jesus said “I will build my church” and He told us to disciple nations.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my church and my pastor, I hear from the Lord and I am equipped in my local church ; and I love to worship with my fellow believers in our local gathering as it brings me great encouragement.  However, my ministry and your ministry is not only in the local building with other believers–it extends outside the four walls into a world that desperately needs and desires your influence and impact.

“All creation waits in eager expectation for the son’s of God to be revealed” Rom. 8:19

You have been placed in the earth for such a time as this to rise up in the areas in which God has placed you and to have a positive influence on people and systems around you.  Your destiny and purpose is in your ministry to others as given to you by the Lord.  Your destiny is not your vocation or occupation, but rather in what God has called you to do within your sphere of influence. Doctor, Housewife and Mom, Banker, Realtor, Construction company owner or worker–doesn’t matter what title you may have, what matters is what you do with it in partnership with Christ.

If you don’t already know what your “outside the four walls ministry” is, then ask the Lord to reveal to you the details of the first stages of your ministry.  He will begin to show you opportunities to partner with Him in the lives of other people and it will be thrilling for you to engage others with the Lord’s strength and anointing on your life.

Going deeper into city reaching strategies and thoughts, I would recommend “Prayer Evangelism” and “Transformation” by Ed Silvoso (www.transformourworld.org).  These are wonderful foundational books with testimonial evidence of how God is moving in lives, cities, and nations today; ordinary people like you and me,  just saying “yes, Lord” and then He shows them what to do–and they are having no small impact!

Until next time, be blessed,
